West Yellowstone Snowmobile Trail Report

The West Yellowstone Chamber of Commerce has released the following snowmobile trail report for January 28th, 2016

Snow report for West Yellowstone and surrounding area Thursday, January 28th: Temperatures this morning are in the high-teens F. Wind will remain out of the west-southwest with speeds increasing to 30 mph this afternoon. Light snow will begin tonight with 1-3” by morning, and another 3-6” is possible tomorrow night.
Snow depth at SnoTel stations: 48”at Madison Plateau (7750 ft outside of West Yellowstone); 35” at Whiskey Creek (6800 ft); 66” Black Bear Cutoff (8170 ft); 40”at Beaver Creek (7850 ft); 54” at Carrot Basin (9000 ft); 37” in Island Park (6290 ft) and 53” White Elephant (7710 ft. in Idaho).
Snowmobile trails are being groomed nightly but groomer repairs on both Idaho and Montana sides are impacting the number of trails being groomed. Check the grooming link report below for what was groomed the previous night. Watch for sled dog teams training on trails this week.
Daily avalanche warning for back country & off trail riders: Due to a poor snowpack structure human triggered avalanches are possible. The avalanche danger today is rated MODERATE on all slopes. Avalanches have the potential to be large. Practice cautious route finding and conservative decision making.
